Three area wrestlers head to State | News, Sports, Jobs – Faribault County Register

Peterson will be competing in the 139-pound weight bracket while Gaydon will be wrestling at 172 pounds. The State Tournament was held at the Xcel Energy Center beginning Feb. 29.
Three area wrestlers punched their ticket to compete in the Minnesota State High School Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The State Tournament got underway with the team part of the competition on Thursday, Feb. 29. The individual portion of the tournament is March 1-2.
Cooper Peterson and Kade Gaydon of Blue Earth Area, along with Byron Getchell of Maple River/United South Central, all advanced to the State Tourney by virtue of their second-place finishes at their respective Section Tournaments which were held on Saturday, Feb. 24.
Wrestling at 139 pounds in the Section 2A Tournament held in Blue Earth, Peterson’s road to State began with a pin in 59 seconds over Nick Firchau of Madelia/Truman in the quarterfinal round.
In the semifinals, Peterson defeated Deven Parpart of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva by a 7-2 decision.
The championship match saw Zach Palmer of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial win by a 3-1 decision over Peterson to give Peterson a second-place finish. He will be making his first appearance in the State Tournament.
Gaydon received a bye in the quarterfinal round of the 172-pound weight class. Gaydon then pinned Nathan Sickler of LCWM in 3:17 to advance to the championship match where he faced George Roesler of NRHEG.
Roesler, ranked eighth in Class A, was able to pin Gaydon in 1:35. Gaydon then had to wrestle a true-second match against Lucas Vaughan of St.Clair-Mankato Loyola. Gaydon prevailed by wrestling to a 17-4 major decision over Vaughan to earn his second trip to the State Tournament.
Other top-four finishers for BEA were Timmy Nagel, who finished third at 114 pounds, and Cory Kitchel, who came in fourth at 189 pounds.
Getchell advanced to the Class AA Individual State Tournament in the 160-pound weight class.
The Section 2AA Tournament saw Getchell begin his day by receiving a bye.
In the quarterfinals, Getchell won by a 6-2 decision over Ethan Dvorak of Scott West.
Getchell’s semifinal match went into overtime before the Longhorns’ wrestler claimed a 3-1 decision over Shaver Ehmke of Mankato West.
The championship match saw Cael Olson of Delano defeat Getchell 7-2, but Getchell returns to the State Tournament after qualifying last year in Class A at 160 pounds.
MR/USC had three other wrestlers place fourth at the Section 2AA meet – Isaiah Gonzalez at 133 pounds, Braxton Simon at 139 and Wyatt Walters at 145.
