WORCESTER, Mass. – In this week’s Covering the Bases, Red Sox infield prospect Matthew Lugo joined Kevin Shea.
Lugo is the nephew of former major leaguer Carlos Beltrán. He talked about the advice his uncle gave him.
"So far the best advice is not change, you know, my essence as a player," Lugo said. "Players tend to get called up and try to be more professional or try to change their approach at the plate or try to do too much. And the best advice that he has told me is how to play the game and the talent’s going to get you to the big leagues and your swing. So, you know, there’s some adjustments you need to make, but just don’t change your essence as a player.
"I know all the coaches," Lugo said of his call-up from AA Portland to AAA Worcester. "I signed in 2019 so I know all the coaches here. I played with some of the guys in Portland last year like Chase [Meidroth] and [Corey] Rosier. I played with [Nick] Sogard in spring training. I’ve seen him a lot. So I felt the warmth of those guys. But the stadium is nicer than Portland. Portland is great. I love Portland. You know, [they have]great fans [and a] great history in Portland. But here, it’s a little nicer stadium, so that’s great."
