CONRAD — BCLUW softball ended its home tournament on a high note on Saturday.
The Comets defeated AGWSR 7-2 in their final game of the Dave Lee Classic on Dave Lee Field in Conrad.
BCLUW salvaged a 1-2 record after a 12-1 loss to Marshalltown on Friday night and a 9-8 loss to South Hamilton early on Saturday morning.
“Our focus was going back to basics, doing the little things,” BCLUW head coach Megan Yantis said. “And I felt like we had high energy.”
In the first inning, BCLUW scored four runs on RBIs from Callie Swanson, Raegan Crawford and two runs scored on AGWSR errors.
The Cougars got within 4-2 in the top of the third, but BCLUW added two more runs on Cougar errors in the bottom of the third and AGWSR got no closer the rest of the way.
“We did a nice job of taking care of the ball defensively and then putting the ball in play,” Yantis said.
The game with South Hamilton seemed to be in hand as BCLUW built an 8-3 lead after three innings, led by two RBI each from Cassie Nason and Raegan Crawford.
However, the Comet defense couldn’t get out of the fourth inning, as an infield error with two outs resulted in four runs scoring for the Hawks with two outs.
South Hamilton repeated the feat in the sixth with three back-to-back hits to take the 9-8 lead. Sarah Garber’s one-out single was all the Comets could get as South Hamilton closed out the comeback victory.
“You can’t let any team get two-out rallies like that,” Yantis said. “We have an error that just gets your morale down, but we just need to be ready to play defensively behind our pitchers on the mound.”
The Comets finished up a six-game week on Saturday with a 7-5 overall record and will try to get some rest before a four-game week next week begins in Conrad on Monday against Dunkerton.
“We’ve got another big week, a couple more conference games we’re going to need to win,” Yantis said. “It’s just nice to see us do the little things right again, and hopefully that will care us into next week.”
