Cecil Joyce of Daily News Journal wins two APSE awards for sports journalism in 2023 – Daily News Journal

Daily News Journal writer Cecil Joyce won two national awards for coverage in 2023 from the Associated Press Sports Editors in its annual sports journalism contest.
Joyce was honored in the top 10 in the D division in long feature for his story on Janae Edmondson, who tragically lost both her legs when the Smyrna volleyball player was struck by a vehicle.
Joyce also won in short feature for his story on twin brothers and high school football coaches Matt and Will Kriesky to preview the Blackman versus Riverdale game.
Sports editors and journalists throughout the country voted on top-10 placements in various writing, website, print newspaper and photography categories, which were split into four divisions based on newspaper circulation or digital readership size.
The exact order of finish in the writing contests will be announced later.
The honors were among the 20 awards won by the USA TODAY Network – Tennessee.
Tennessee football beat writer Adam Sparks of Knox News placed top 10 in prestigious investigative writing, which combines all entries into one category instead of four circulation divisions. He led the Network with five wins overall.
Four of the Network’s news organizations — The Tennessean, Knox News, The Commercial Appeal and Daily News Journal — were recognized.
